Sing Me A Song About | Illustrated Poem & Songbook
Illustration Drawings & Watercolor Paintings / Title & Cover Design / Book Layout
Problem to solve: Visually represent each poem/song with an illustration, and layout book with sheet music and written poems. These illustrations were hand drawn and hand painted with watercolors, then scanned and added to book layout using Adobe InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop.
For this project I was approached by my client with some of her family’s favorite original children’s songs. My client requested each song have an illustration to represent both the song and poem and to have the finished product as an easy to read children’s songbook. Once I started reading her materials, I immediately had ideas spring to life in my head for each poem and the project began. Since each illustration was hand drawn and painted with watercolors it took a bit longer than I had anticipated, but the finished product was worth it!
For this project I worked closely with my mom, Annette Randall, who I hired as a consultant to help develop the illustration style for both the characters and animals. After collaborating together we came up with ideas for each poem. She hand drew each illustration, then I painted them with watercolors, bringing them to life with color.
Once all the illustrations were finished, I digitized each painting and edited them in Photoshop, bringing out colors and contrast. This really set off each illustration in the finished book. Using Adobe InDesign, I laid out the book with the text and sheet music for each poem, leaving space for the illustrations. After some initial revisions I finished the book and prepped the files for printing.
Here are a few of the illustrations included in the book:
